A three-session workshop, called: Push the Stop Button---to reflect and create collages with three questions, caught my attention.
The first collage question was: What do you love?
Three of us, in addition to our facilitator, who also created a collage, gathered in quiet space for two hours. All materials were provided. (Varied magazines, newspapers, scissors, pens, markers, different sizes of poster board and cardboard pieces, and glue.)
Our facilitator began by reading a poem about what we might love, by David Whyte. She asked us not to have any judgement about ourselves and what we’re drawn to; or have concerns about how the completed collage might look.
After a half hour, we were asked to start putting our collage together, then start glueing. A fifteen-minute time was given to finish, clean up and gather at our round table.
Each of us shared our collage with our thoughts. Each person present could offer an affirmation of something noticed. The space held loving acceptance.
I created a collage many years ago (like 30!) after reading about how your wishes need naming and how they can come true. I savored and saved my collage even through a move. I took it out again, and was amazed to find, wishes had come true; like my desire to write my story.
My “What do you love collage?”, spoke of fun. I was surprised and delighted. Though surprised, I do understand. Fun. Yes! You can see my words, pictures, and white spaces. The white spaces speak of freedom. Freedom to BE, be me, grow, and have fun.
What do YOU love?
Do I hear a collage in the making?
