If you started with my first blog on writing, I’d love to
hear what you said in your essay “I can’t write because…”
Secondly, what did you write in your columns: youth, adult, and concerns?
Let’s take a moment on that thought. If you haven’t already
written items under youth and adult, write what you’ve done. You can start with
a simple childhood accomplishment—maybe riding a bike. No matter how little or
big it seems, put it in your column. Maybe you started with your first memory,
and maybe you were two years old.
Under concerns, did you write concerns about the
writing process? Did you write about concerns you have in life? Did you find
you have something you’d like people to know? Do you have a passion? Do you
want to write about one subject, or several, or a memoir or a novel?
What is your dream?
To start that dream, start with writing one thought,
one paragraph, one essay, then another and another. No matter where you start,
start and keep your writing. Don’t destroy any of it. It is sacred. Make sure
you protect it. By that I mean, it’s yours; it’s who you are. Be careful how
you share it, if you share it at all. Don’t let someone else’s thoughts about
your writing affect you, discourage you. Sharing can take away your energy
about the situation you’re describing, too. Just keep going.
You can tell someone who is interested in your writing that
you’re not sure what it’s about yet.
Another idea to get started is to
create a timeline of your life. You may be 30 years old, you may be 50, you
may be 80; still create the timeline.
Create a timeline by decades. Make columns or a literal
line----.
In your columns of decades, or on your timeline, write a
few words of the highs and lows of your life. Give
yourself plenty of room because more ideas and memories will come.
By highs and lows, I mean what gives you joy and/or energy?
What brings you sadness or loss of energy? Sometimes an event brings you
sadness, yet fulfillment, such as the funeral of a dear friend. Put it
somewhere in your timeline.
I bet you find you have many ideas; more than you ever
imagined.
Pick what catches your interest now. Write.
Next blog I’ll talk about the writing process, to edit, and,
yet, keep going.
Remember, I never thought I’d write; never thought I’d be
published.
Do treat yourself along the way. Celebrate.
